80% favour the EU – we must end uncertainty

February 5th, 2016 Martin Walker News 0 comments 0

Newton Aycliffe’s MP this week asked the Prime Minister to end the uncertainty over the EU and get on with a referendum.

Phil Wilson, chair of a Labour group of MPs campaigning to stay in the European Union, says 80% of businesses in his constituency a pro-EU.

The Labour MP for Sedgefield carried out a survey of businesses in the Sedgefield area last year, many of which were Aycliffe firms.

Now he wants to see the Government crack on and let the country have its say.

David Cameron has been meeting key EU figures aiming to do a reforms deal which will help to keep Britain in Europe.

But during PM’s questions on Wednesday, Mr Wilson challenged the premier.

“More than 80% of businesses in my constituency want to stay in the EU. More than 50% of the jobs are linked to trade with the EU,” said the Labour whip.

“Our membership is vital to jobs, prosperity and security, and that is why Labour Members are united in campaigning to stay in Europe.

“Do we not need to end the uncertainty, have the referendum as soon as possible, and campaign to stay in the EU?”

Mr Cameron replied: “Obviously I am keen to end the uncertainty, but I am not in any hurry if we cannot get the right deal.

“I think we have set out very clearly what needs to be done, and I think it is possible for that to be agreed in February, but if it takes longer we shall have to be patient, because getting this right really matters.”
