Tribute paid to ‘Honest John’ after he retires

February 25th, 2020 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

A Newton Aycliffe community group has paid tribute to a well-known local charity fundraiser after he was forced to retire.

John Hilton – better known as “Honest John” – says he’s had to end his charity work through ill-health.

Honest John has raised tends of thousands of pounds for local good causes over the years by selling bric-a-brac from his stall, which has been at various locations on the town.

Horndale Community Association chairman Philip Clark said: “Everyone at Horndale Community Association are saddened to hear of John’s recent illness and hope his health improves soon.

“We would like to thank John and Val for their support they have given to our group since we started in 2012 – the funding we received over the years has brought a lot of happiness and joy too many people.

“They supported us on our first project to build a Multi Use Games Area, trips and Community Fun Day all of which were important community events.

“We wish John and Val a restful and peaceful retirement.”

It’s estimated Honest John has raised an average of £20,000 a year for local clubs and voluntary groups over the last 12 years – totalling well over £200,000.
