Soccer star Sydney set for States adventure

May 26th, 2020 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

A Newton Aycliffe school student is set for a soccer adventure in America after getting a US scholarship.

Greenfield Community College year 11 student Sydney has been chosen to join team USA on a Soccer Scholarship in the States, with a contract due to start in August 2021.

Sydney made a great impression at a Newcastle showcase event organised by Five Star Football Events.

The opportunity will give her the chance to train at world class facilities with expert coaching in the US whilst studying, what an amazing accomplishment and an inspiration for her team-mates.

Sydney, like many Greenfield students, is busy keeping fit during lockdown, following a busy routine of running, weight training and exercise she is preparing for a time when the new season can begin.

She has been playing for Washington Lionesses U18s and has recently been awarded the privilege of captaining the England Five Star Team who are facing Scotland Five Start team in the new season.

Students at Greenfield have been working remotely together to continue their fitness, building upon the teamwork evident in a range of sports and activities during the spring term.

Despite sports being on hold currently, individual students and staff have been sharing their activities online.

“This is unsurprising following a number of successes earlier in the year when exceptional attendance at clubs and team practice paid dividends,” says the school.

“Mrs Davis, director of sport, was thrilled with the way the teams worked together on one site with a string of sporting successes and an excellent team spirit across the board.”
