Durham Constabulary recruiting new Special Constables

September 7th, 2017 Martin Walker News 0 comments 356

The top performing police force in the country is set to recruit new Special Constables.

Applications to join Durham Constabulary as a Special Constable will open at 9.30am on Monday (September 11).

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday September 22.

‘Specials’, as they are known, are volunteer police officers who commit a minimum of 16 hours per month to supporting front-line policing across County Durham and Darlington.

They have the same powers as regular police officers, and wear the same uniform.

Chief Officer Dale Checksfield, who heads up Durham Special Constabulary, said: “We’re looking for ordinary people who want to do something extraordinary in their communities. We welcome people from all backgrounds and all walks of life.

“Being a Special Constable is one of the most challenging roles a volunteer can do, but it’s also one of the most rewarding. As well as playing a vital role in supporting our front-line officers across the county, you’ll make friends and develop skills for life.

“If you want to keep our communities safe, be the first on scene at an emergency, investigate crime, protect the vulnerable and make a difference to people’s lives, we want to hear from you.”

Ron Hogg, Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington, said: “Special Constables are an integral part of the force, delivering front-line policing in support of regular officers. This recruitment opportunity will provide volunteers with a broad range of new experiences and skills, whilst helping to keep all of our communities safe.”

Specials complete a rigorous training programme before qualifying to go out on patrol.

Travel expenses within County Durham, training and equipment are provided.

Applicants must be 18 or over and must be physically fit enough to perform the role – fitness is tested annually.

A webchat with CO Checksfield will take place from 8pm to 9pm on Monday 11th September on the Durham Special Constabulary Facebook page, facebook.com/DurhamPoliceSC
