Newton Aycliffe completed a headline-grabbing swoop when they signed former Spennymoor Town and Sunderland RCA hitman Gavin Barton.
With star striker Dan Mellanby opting to join the Darlington revolution and Warren Byrne joining Crook Town, Newtonians’ boss Allan Oliver moved for the 26-year-old frontman, a prolific goalscorer in the Northern League.
Barton’s goals helped Gillford Park to promotion from the second tier of the Northern League last season, while he also counts Bishop Auckland, Crook Town, South Shields and Consett as former stops in his career.
The Bishop Auckland-born striker follows West Auckland midfielder Martin Young and Jarrow Roofing winger Kris Hughes to Moore Lane Park, as Oliver continues his squad strengthening.
